Blaauwklippen – “Passionate about our future and inspired by the past.”

My Sunday visit to Blaauwklippen was met with an atmosphere of pure joy. It was a bright sunny day, with the smells of food coming from the food stalls, music tunes and laughter. Walking across the greenest of grass to the tasting room had me drinking in the great view. The busyness of the Weekend Market added a festive mood and groups of people enjoying a picnic on the grass brought back a childhood nostalgia. The magic of a simple picnic basket long not forgotten.

Blaauwklippen was founded in 1682 and this makes it one of the oldest wine farms in Stellenbosch, and the second oldest in South Africa. Here they produce wines of distinction in harmony with the simplicity of country living. Offering a tasting experience, restaurant, deli and market, the reasons to visit is easily found!

As if the taste of Blaauwklippen wine, the fresh food produce and the sunlight through the giant trees does not create enough of family day out vibe, you are blown away by the friendliness of the staff and the variety of the market, from breads and delights, food and drinks, to unique arts and crafts and photo moments. A bike park caters for the needs of kids, and parents.

I walked through thinking – it just does not end. There is more to see, smell, taste and enjoy than meets the eye.

The wine tasting was the star of the day. The historical building has a certain charm about it and the chosen décor only enhances the feel of the tasting room. The fully booked tasting room offers a relaxed and welcome mood. Enjoying the moment is as easy as sitting back. Choosing your selection of tasting and/or pairing does come with a challenge, you might just want to try them all! To complete your wine tasting, a selection of platters on the menu will entice your taste buds.

Nature has given us the amazing gift of wine grapes and at Blaauwklippen, a 100% red-grape farm, they have mastered the art of creating wine, pot-still brandies and craft gin.

Our tasting was an enjoyable and tasty one, from being met by our hostess to the neatly sorted bill. They take the calculation out of splitting the bill with a pre-suggested division on the bill. This, like the pallet cleaners on the table, was a nice, surprising touch.

This jewel also offers accommodation. Blaauklippen Manor is the perfect escape for anyone looking for a uniquely styled stay in a historical, luxury and exclusive space. The restored Manor with modern details and features does not harm the historical look and feel of the Manor. On-route to the Manor on a short walking path you are met with a quaint little dam and lush trees.

Blaauwklippen is a popular site for tourists and locals to visit and it was easy to see why.
