Malaria, the preventable life-threatening illness

Malaria is a severe illness than can be life-threatening, but can be prevented. With the necessary precautions, like the knowledge of high-risk malaria areas and taking your medication correctly, the chances of contracting this illness can be reduced.

                THE TRANSMISSION

Malaria is transmitted to a human through a bite from an infected female anopheles’ mosquito. Fortunately, these mosquitoes are not found everywhere, therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with the high-risk areas when travelling.

                PREVENTATION IS POSSIBLE

Make sure you apply an insect repellent that contains DEED to all exposed skin and wear long=sleeved tops and trousers. If available, make use of overhead fans and screens on windows and doors. A mosquito net treated with an insecticide can be used to sleep under.

MEDICATION CAN ONLY WORK WHEN TAKEN CORRECTLY

For your medication to work and prevent you from getting malaria, it has to be taken correctly – the correct dosage and to be taken at the same time each day. Malaria medication has to be taken before, during and after your trip the course has to be completed.

To improve absorption the tablets should be taken with food or milk. For children unable to swallow tablets, the malaria tablets can be crushed and mixed with condensed milk. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and then continue as before and if you vomit within one hour, the dose has to be repeated.

                SIDE EFFECTS MIGHT BE EXPERIENCED

Although well tolerated, side effects like headache, abdominal pain or mouth ulcers can occur. Any side effects should be reported to a health consultant.

                DO I HAVE MALARIA?

There might still be a chance of contracting malaria, even with precautions and correct usage of medication. If you have been in a high-risk malaria area and experience ‘flulike’ symptoms such as headache, chills or muscular pain, any time from 7-10 days after entering the area and for a few months after leaving the area, it is very important that you urgently consult your doctor.
