MORE FUN AT YOUR FAVOURITE STELLENBOSCH WINDMILL WITH DISC GOLF AND AN ALL-NEW SMOKED MENU:
Playing along the rules of traditional regular golf, disc golf is sometimes referred to as Frisbee Golf. It is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target and dates back to the 1970’s developed in the US. Using a high-speed flying disc, resembling a Frisbee, the final target is not a hole in the ground, but an elevated metal basket with chains. See video:
Throwing from a stating tee every throw is counted until the disc is thrown into the basket and that then becomes the score for that hole. The terminology used comes from traditional ball golf, each hole has a ‘par’ score, you start the hole from a tee pad etc.
The first course designed with obstacles to manipulate the disc’s flight, is coming to Cape Town and will find a home at The Purple Windmill in Stellenbosch. Co-owner of The Purple Windmill Marisa Havinga says an 18-hole course will soon follow after the opening of the 9-hole course. Marisa goes on to say that the practice basket will open on Heritage Day, 24 September, well known to South Africans as ‘Braai Dag’.
With all the hustle and bustle and renovations on site, this year’s ‘Braai Dag’ will mark the launch of ‘Smoke Day’ at The Purple Windmill with a set menu, entertainment and activities for young and old. The kid’s playpark is still fully operational and parents are reminded to bring dry clothes and towels on a summer day. The popular ‘Plaas Mol’ craft market will be open as well, bringing to best of arts, crafts and hand-made products under one roof. The Purple Windmill is also host to other activities like live music, aqua golf and target shooting. The ‘Kruip Mol’ is fully licensed bar with beer on tap and a delicious menu.
