THE LONG-STANDING HISTORY OF PERMANENT MAKE-UP REQUIRES THE HAND OF AN EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONAL:

THE ART OF PERMANENT MAKE-UP DATES BACK TO 3300 B.C WITH THE FIRST MODERN APPLICATION OF PERMANENT COSMETICS APPLIED BY SUTHERLAND MCDONALD IN 1902. UNLIKE TATTOOING, WHICH IS DONE WITH INK, PERMANENT MAKE-UP OR ‘DERMA PIGMENTATION’ IS DONE WITH VEGETABLE DYE, MAKING THIS A SEMI-PERMANENT PROCEDURE.

Where tattooing is the art of injecting ink into the skin, permanent-make uses pigments. Pigments are iron oxides, usually with water and glycerin added, whereas tattoo ink is made up of pigments combined with a carrier and a number of chemicals such as lead, chromium, nickel etc. The two procedures might appear similar, but it is said to be safer than tattooing as the procedure only reaches the epidermis of your skin and is less toxic than the ink used for tattooing.

We spoke to Conny Brand, founder and owner of Panorama Permanent Make-Up Clinic in Durbanville about the art of permanent make-up.

                Safety first for this artist/therapist

For Conny the client’s safety is very important and she emphasizes that a consultation prior to any procedure is done to ensure the needs, questions and medical history is discussed. Conny also takes the client’s age into consideration and works closely with the medical professionals to ensure a possible high-risk client is indeed able to receive treatment.

“I prefer clients to be older than 21. There really is no age limit; you can have permanent make-up done at the age of 80, with a doctor’s consent. Your medical history and condition has to be taken into consideration.” -Conny-

Conny says skin under 21 years of age is still sensitive and delicate. The age of 25 is ideal for not only the skin, but the choice of procedure.

From lips, eyes and brows to advanced permanent make-up

As a well trained and experienced artist/therapist, Conny also specializes in the advanced procedures of permanent make-up correction.

“We can correct a procedure that was done previously. Generally, it’s done through a process of camouflaging and the client might need to go for laser treatment prior to lighten the area.”           -Conny-

Conny often works with plastic surgeons to assist with reconstructing and camouflage treatments, like the areola and nipple procedures. Conny explains that this is a lengthy process.

‘It can take up to six months to complete this advanced procedure.” -Conny-

With a vast range of colors available for lips, eyeliner and brows, it makes the client’s choice in pigment and style broader. Lips can be done in a nude color, lip-blush with no definition it that is the client’s choice. The look and colors are discussed with the client during the consultation. Conny goes on to say that the techniques and styles has advanced significantly over the past 20-years, all in the client’s favor.

Conny says the trends, techniques and equipment have advanced over the past 20 years, making permanent make-up and corrections much sought-after and safe procedures.

A word from a client

Pam Scott says she would not trust anyone else to do any permanent make-up or tattooing on her face apart from Conny.

“She has a wonderful way of putting one at ease and her work is really excellent. Many of my friends have visited her and all have been extremely happy with the work that was done. She gets 10 out of 10 in my books!” -Pam-

                Choose wisely

Although permanent make-up is, in fact, a semi-permanent procedure, you should still choose your artist/therapist with care. Depending on your choice of procedure and the area, it can last from one, up to eight years. To ensure a pleasant and satisfying experience and result, your choice of therapist is the first step when looking at going the route of permanent make-up.

Your artist/therapist should be accredited with a, PCASA (Permanent Cosmetic Association of South Africa) certificate, ensuring the correct code of ethics are followed. PCASA is the governing body and is an international accredited exam.  It is important for artists/therapists to familiarize themselves with new trends and advances in the industry with refreshment courses and training. Your therapist should take time in explaining the steps to you and the procedure should never be a rushed one.

Permanent make-up is a popular solution and can save time and money. No more smudging of eye liner and picture-perfect brows and lips can stare back at you in the mirror with this procedure. Numbing creams are used to lessen the pain and for some areas, like the lips, an injection can ensure a 100% pain-free experience.

You will need consultation, procedure and touch-up appointments.
