Royal pardon not on the cards for Ashley Oosthuizen

Ashley Oosthuizen celebrated her 23rd birthday on 3 March this year in a Thailand jail after her death sentence was reduced to life in prison. Asley was accused and found guilty of being a drug mule on 8 October 2020. The story grabbed the nation and even with her former boyfriend, Tristan Nettles’s confession, Ashley remains in prison.

Ashely’s mother, Lynn Blignaut took a trip and stayed in Thailand during April and May. Lynn stayed with a family in the Phrom Khiri District about 20km from the prison. Although she was unable to see Ashley, she did manage to speak to the prison wardens and voiced her questions. We caught up and spoke to Lynn after her visit.

                No in-prison visits

After repetitive 30-day quarantine periods, Blignaut wanted to know from the prison wardens why the quarantine period was so lengthy.

“They explained that it was because of the COVID positive cases and every time someone tested positive for COVID, the 30-day quarantine period would start all over again.” -Lynn-

During Lynn’s visit, prisoners was still not allowed any in-prison visits and are not allowed to receive any parcels. They are still allowed one 10-minute video call per month.

Lynn was able to leave a Bible, two books, a photo and some money for Ashley.

Royal pardon application only if she pleads guilty

Just like the rest of Ashley’s supporters, her family was hoping that Ashley would be allowed the opportunity to apply for a royal pardon. For this to be possible, Ashley needs to spend at least four years in prison and plead guilty on the charges.

“Ashley said there is no way she’s doing that. She is innocent and will not admit guilt to something she’s not responsible for.” -Lynn-

The family’s hopes are now on Ashely’s appeal which they are now eagerly awaiting.

Ashley eats, sleeps and dreams in Thai.

According to Blignaut Ashley is staying positive although it’s clear that the situation and circumstances are now getting to her. Her fellow in-mates are treating her well and she even managed to get a job as librarian in the prison. She furthers teaches dancing and some of her students will be competing in Bangkok.

“Unfortunately, Ashley can’t go because of her sentence and the serious crime she’s being accused of.” -Lynn-

Lynn says Ashley is now fluent in writing, reading and talking Thai.

The family is asking for continuing support in prayers and: “mercy, grace and a fair judge” in Ashley’s appeal case.
