Duel of the Barbers 2022 did not come without its own share of challenges this year. The original date had to be moved on and then the ‘Beauty Expo 2022’ was cancelled only days before the competition was said to take place. The organizers, sponsors and competitors found themselves without a venue.
Antoinette Coetzee from Scissors on Main in Paarl, founder, organizer and sponsor, was not going to let the matter of a venue put a halt to this year’s competition and managed to secure a new venue. The Woodstock Brewery agreed to host and accommodate Duel of the Barbers 2022 on short notice.

WAHL SA has been a proud sponsor of Duel of the Barbers since the start of the competition four years ago. Jason Knight from WHAL SA was looking forward to see the growth of the barbers.
“We saw a definite growth in the barbers. Not only in their cutting styles, but also in business management and mentoring.” -Jason-
Jason goes on to say that it was amazing to see the industry alive and progression again. New people coming into the industry and the competition proves a demand and hunger. Barbers wants to level up, cut better and achieve the same level as their mentors. Jason says that seeing the new competitors nervous is a good sign, it means they care about what they want to achieve.
“Seeing the barbers battling it out and being in such good spirits is amazing. The spirit of community amongst the barbers shows love and support. It was exciting to see how competitors support each other, each wanting the next barber to level up and go to the next phase in their career.” -Jason-
Jason hopes that the 2023 competition will see more barbers, and female barbers, stepping out of their comfort zone and come show their skill, connect and network.
“It’s an opportunity and they should take it. Once you take the opportunity, the work cannot be undone. You might stay at the same level, but you can go backwards. Take the risk, battle it out. You can never undo the experience.” -Jason-
